Bueno aqui tengo algunas cosas con que partir.. Investigando en algunos foros encontré dos personas que tienen el mismo sintoma y todo apunta al diferencial:

1.- when i'm driving forward in my van everything's fine but as soon as i lift off the accelerator and it starts engine braking there's a deep humming noise from either the gearbox or the differential at the back.
if i press the clutch pedal or put it in neutral most if the noise disappears apart from a very faint hum.

why would reverse pressure (if you know what i mean) on the diffs or gearbox cause this noise... anyone have any ideas?

When you are on power the gears are held tightly engaged together. When you back off they are unloaded they can rattle round in the backlash, making the noise. They will go on for quite a long time like this but they can also fail unpredictably

2.- Several situations can create ring-and-pinion noise.
If the gears howl during deceleration only, it’s possible that the pinion-bearing preload has loosened.

Saludos,

Mario
