I measured a '74 FJ40 with a Kayline soft top on, and a '97 TJ with a hard top on.
Windshield height, top to the cowl TLC 24" TJ 26" (this surprised me)
Width of windshield at bottom of hinge TLC 56.5" TJ 58" (surprise #2)
Distance measured horizontally from the base of the windshield back to the rear of the top
TLC 83" TJ 83"
Distance from the top to the tub (side) On the TLC this was at the center bow (highest spot) and on the TJ this was just at the rear on the doors TLC 31" TJ 28"
I'm maybe 80% sure that your idea of a trail cover for a TJ used on a TLC might be a good workable idea. The only issue I can imagine would be the fit at the very top, front-to-rear, becasue the TJ has a more 'raked' windshield and therefore a cover for it might not end up covering a TLC across the rear. Hope this helps.
